How We Chose Them
We read Google’s results for web design oxford, web design oxfordshire, wordpress developer oxford and web design and seo packages oxford, then kept the studios that passed four tests.
Reviews are the rating and count Google showed beside each studio in its map results. A studio we only saw in the ordinary results has no figure in the table, because we did not see one.
- A base in Oxford or Oxfordshire, stated by the studio itself or on its Google profile.
- In the map results or on the first page for at least one of those searches.
- Websites as the main work, so studios that only do print or brand identity are not here.
- Nothing given in return for a place. We build websites as well, so we are not on it.
EL6 Apps
EL6 Apps was the top ordinary result for web design oxford in two of our three readings. It builds WordPress websites, says each one is fast and set up for search from the start, and works with businesses across Oxfordshire.
Herd
Herd describes itself as a design agency based in Oxford that makes websites, branding, ecommerce and print. Its Google profile lists Woodstock, seven years or more in business and 36 reviews at five stars, and it was in the map results for web design oxfordshire.
A good fit if you want the website and the brand designed by the same people.
Niki Peach Design
Niki Peach Design presents itself as an experienced Oxford designer working on websites, branding, graphic design and online shops. Its Google profile shows fifteen years or more in business and 14 reviews at five stars, and the reviews name Niki directly.
Worth a look if you would rather deal with the person designing your site than with an account manager.
Oxford Web Builders
Oxford Web Builders says it is a website design company based in Oxford, working on design, development and SEO for all kinds of business. It was the first result for web design and seo packages oxford when we searched, which suits a buyer who wants the build and the search work in one quote.
Oxford Web Services
Oxford Web Services works from 38 Canal Street and was second in the map results for web design oxford in all three readings, with 36 Google reviews at five stars and seven years or more in business. It builds custom sites and online shops, and its Google profile also lists SEO packages, website security and ongoing support.
Pixant
Pixant is a creative agency in Kidlington doing web design and branding. Its Google profile shows seven years or more in business and six reviews at five stars, and it was in the map results for web design oxford and web design oxfordshire.
Google files it as a design agency rather than a web designer, which fits a studio that leads with how a site looks.
Rare Form New Media
Rare Form New Media has built websites in Oxford since 1998 and works from 28 Beaumont Street. It was first in the map results for web design oxford in every reading, with 54 Google reviews averaging 4.9.
It describes a small, woman-led team of senior designers and developers with no sales staff, recommends WordPress for most businesses and builds shops on Shopify or WooCommerce. It also makes apps.
Technique Web
Technique Web is based in Banbury, in the north of the county, and offers web design, development and SEO. It was on the first page for both web design oxford and web design oxfordshire, so it is one to consider if your business sits nearer Banbury than the city.
The Digital Presence
The Digital Presence says it is based in the heart of Oxfordshire and builds bespoke websites, all of them on WordPress, and it mentions WordPress training for clients. It was third among the ordinary results for web design oxford in two of our readings.
Urban Element
Urban Element has designed websites since 2003 and calls itself a specialist WordPress agency, from a base in north Oxfordshire. Its WordPress page was the top result for wordpress developer oxford when we searched, so it suits a business that wants a WordPress build from a team that also runs search and social campaigns.
How Do You Check a Web Designer’s Portfolio?
A portfolio shows you how sites look. These five checks show you whether they work, and none of them takes more than a few minutes.
- Open three of their sites on your phone. Each should load in a moment and read without zooming in.
- Search Google for what one of their clients sells and where, such as florist Summertown. If that client is nowhere on the first page, ask the studio why.
- Run one page through PageSpeed Insights, Google’s free speed test. A weak mobile score on a site the studio chose to show you is worth a question.
- Look at the date of the newest project. A portfolio that stops years ago tells you something.
- Ask to speak to a client. A five-minute call says more than any case study.
What Should You Agree Before Work Starts?
Most disputes over a website come from something nobody wrote down. Settle these in writing first.
- Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the site files. They should be in your name.
- Whether you can change text and photos yourself, and on which system.
- What the price covers: how many pages, who writes the words, who supplies the photos, and how many rounds of changes.
- Who looks after the site after launch, and what that costs each month or year.
- Whether search is part of the build: page titles, headings, speed and your Google Business Profile.
Do You Need a Web Designer Who Also Does SEO?
Not always, but somebody has to think about search, because a site can look excellent and still get no visitors from Google. The pages need clear titles, a sensible structure and quick loading, and the business needs a Google profile that points to them.
Several studios on this list sell SEO alongside the build, among them Oxford Web Services, Oxford Web Builders, Technique Web and EL6 Apps. Others lead with design and branding, such as Herd, Pixant and Niki Peach Design. If you choose a design-led studio, ask who will handle search, or plan for it separately.
